24k GOLD leaf – Keum Boo
The 24k gold leaf is specially created and has a special thickness, so that it can be applied in the Keum-Boo technique.
Keum-Boo is an ancient Korean technique of fusing a sheet of pure gold (24k) to the surface of metals (silver, steel, copper, bronze)
Due to the intense oxidation of steel, copper and bronze, the gilding of these metals is more difficult, but fine silver and sterling are much more reliable as a base metal for this technique. If you use .925 sterling silver, it is recommended to clean the silver by reducing the copper and obtaining a layer of pure silver on the surface of the piece.
How does it work?
Pure precious metals such as silver and gold have about the same atomic structure, therefore, they have an increased potential to be fused. Thus, heating these metals to temperatures between 500 and 700 ° C causes the movement of atoms to increase. If pressure is added, it will result in an exchange of electrons on the surface between the two metals, creating a solid and permanent bond.
Careful! Not to be confused with the gold leaf used for restorations and polishing, which is sold in craft stores. The gold leaf for Keum Boo is much thicker and is only pure 24K GOLD. It is intended for application on jewelry.
